Mud Thearpy
WHAT IS MUD OR PELOID?
(from Greek pelos – mud, clay)
Mud is considered a fossil mineral resource. It is unconsolidated water basin sediments mixed with water that has formed as a result of natural geological processes. Therapeutic mud comes from natural formations consisting from water, organic matter and minerals.
HOW MUD WORKS
- Its biostimulating properties promote regeneration of damaged skin and relieve symptoms of allergy.
- Antimicrobial properties help prevent development of pathogenic bacteria by contributing to their destruction.
- Antioxidant properties help prevent spontaneous autoxidation of substances essential for living organisms that results in products that are toxic to the organisms.
Therapeutic effect of mud treatments is significant. Mud continues working for 2-24 hours after the actual treatment. Effect of each treatment is combined with the effect of the previous treatment and that is why a full course of treatment has a stronger and more durable effect than that of one or several treatment sessions.
WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM MUD THERAPY
It is recommended for:
- Musculoskeletal
- Nervous
- Digestive
- Genital
- Skin and other conditions
One principle applies to all: the more active the condition is, the more delicate mud therapy must be. We cannot forget that mud therapy also has many contraindications. Please follow the advice of your doctor.
WHAT MUD TREATMENTS ARE THERE?
At Jaunķemeri, mud therapy includes:
- Applications
- Sulphurous mud baths
- Mud treatments in combination with electrotherapy
HOW IS MUD FOR TREATMENTS OBTAINED?
Mud is excavated from Lake Slokas swamp and delivered to Jaunķemeri where, in a special ‘mud kitchen’, we remove all roots and stones from the mud and leave it to dry for a while. After that, mud is crushed and sulphurous mineral water is added to it. Mud is heated to 50 °C in a water bath and delivered to the treatment table.
HOW IS MUD APPLIED?
A dry blanket is put on the table and covered with polyethylene film. A 4-5 cm thick layer of heated therapeutic mud (at 38-46 °C) is created in the area of the treated body part. You are placed into the mud and the application area is covered with a thick layer of mud on top and on the sides. After that, you are covered with film and then a blanket or a throw. Another blanket or throw can be put on top for better heat insulation.
Treatment duration is 10-15 minutes. During the session, mud will cool down to body temperature. After the treatment, all covers and mud are removed.
You should take a warm shower (36-37 °C) without any soap or washing products.
WHAT TO REMEMBER
- Do not use soap or other washing products after treatment.
- You must rest after treatment and cannot go outdoors for at least 1 or 2 hours.
WHAT YOU NEED FOR THE SESSION
Pool slippers.
HOW IT IS DONE
General mud baths are done in accordance with the established Ķemeri Resort traditions: 40 kg (3 buckets) of prepared mud is placed in a 200-litre bathtub and the bathtub is filled with mineral water. The mud is mixed with water and the temperature in the bath is 38-39 °C.
Bath duration is 10-20 minutes. After the bath, take a warm shower.
WHAT TO REMEMBER
- It is not recommended using soap or washing products after the treatment.
- You must rest after treatment and cannot go outdoors for at least 1 or 2 hours.
